Methi (Fenugreek) Pizza Dough
Pizza dough is one of those things that seems so complicated to make but once you do it, you never look back. This dough is my mama's recipe since we were kids, in the recipe she wrote for me she noted you can add herbs so when I first made this a few years back i had a bunch of Methi (dried fenugreek leaves) in my spice cabinet and decided to throw that in. Safe to say, this is now my go-to pizza dough recipe (which was given to all my friends during the covid baking craze)! All you'll need is...
2 cups of flour
1/4 tsp of salt
1/2 tsp of sugar
1 tsp of quick rise yeast
1 cup of dried methi
1 cup of warm water
*you can half the recipe for a thin crust pizza
Mix all the dry ingredients together then add the water. Mix until a sticky dough ball is formed (if needed add a sprinkle or two more of flour) and then cover with a tea towel (or something similar) & let rise. I usually let it rise for about 45min - an hour.
Once risen, you just need to roll out and add your favourite toppings! You are more than welcome to use a rolling pin but I find your hands to be the best utensil when pressing this out (the best pizzas are never a perfect circle anyways). Rub some olive oil on your hands to prevent sticking and press down until an even surface is created. Once all your toppings are added, bake on med heat until golden brown!
Now the beauty of homemade pizza dough, the possibilities are endless! You can add whatever you like to this dough...garlic powder, thyme, oregano...even leave it plain, whatever your family likes best!
From a mama's perspective, Aunty Angie says the main benefit of fenugreek is that it's known as a 'galactagogue' which is an herb that increases your milk supply (to all my nursing mama's out there, what better reason to eat pizza right?) Traditionally fenugreek is used to lower blood sugar. Either way, you can feel good about serving this to your whole family!
